Purchased for $50 on clearance. This is the fourth RC helicopter I have owned, and the only one that was actually stable enough to fly outside. Quite frankly, if you're flying outside, you need a big, bulky thing to help with stability. The build is intelligently strong, utilizing metal piping and re-enforcement where you would expect, and plastic energy-absorbing parts where it makes sense to. On a breezeless day, it holds up rather well.
It does need to be a breezeless day, however. At maximum forward speed, this thing gets maybe 1 mile per hour. If the breeze is blowing at 3 miles per hour, it's just going downwind. It can also be blown around enough that the two main rotors touch each other, with predictably bad results. The range seems to top out at about 50 feet, though this area does have a lot of interference. That's about as far as you can reasonably go in a city, but don't expect to be flying this thing remotely across town.
Durability so far has been impressive. While I have had 3 helicopters before, 1 never ran and 2 died almost immediately. This one, however, has held up to a few light crashes and some severe bumps. By RC Helicopter standards, that's practically a tank. And along the lines of tanking, the massive size means that torque from the rotors isn't nearly as much of a problem as it is on smaller helicopters. I keep forgetting that I'm supposed to need to trim the thing, as unlike the smaller copters, at its worst trim setting it only adds a small curve like the alignment in your car being off.
Avoid the tiny featherweight indoor copters which twitch and spin like confused hummingbirds. Indoor copters really are advanced tools. Something like this is a solid choice for a learning helicopter, for someone who just wants to get used to the feeling of hovering.
