**As of November 2012, Lego listed this product as "Retiring Soon" and was, itself, sold out of the set. Supplies remain available here and there, but you should expect prices to begin to rise above MSRP. I am the nut-job parent that you'll see in some of the other train reviews. I grew up with Lego and returned to it when I had kids. Obviously I am terribly partial to Lego (ignore my star rating), but I'll give you the best review I can so that you can make the decision that is right for your kids. I do not receive free sets or compensation for my Lego reviews. This set began trickling into U.S. stores in early July, 2011.
A tidy and nicely designed set, 3677 includes a heavy switching engine (similar to a Deutsche Bundesbahn Class 290 diesel locomotive), a small green and white hazardous waste boxcar (with a pallet of lime green barrels), tipping ballast car, and maintenance-of-way (MOW) flatcar (which has a small cab, MOW truck, small crane and pallet). The MOW truck has flip-down rail wheels. There is also a trackside conveyor belt loader for the ballast, a trackside hopper, and four mini-figures.
The set includes all the necessary Power Function parts (i.e., it is a remotely controlled, motorized train) and requires only batteries. The red battery box (a new color for this part) holds six AAA batteries and sits inside the engine. Lego also included the gray battery cover as a spare. If you don't like changing out AAAs, you can opt for the more expensive rechargeable lithium-ion battery and DC charger available directly from Lego. The lithium-ion battery has a gray cover, but if you are handy you can swap the covers using a small screwdriver. The set includes 16 pieces of curved track, 8 pieces of straight track, and 16 pieces of flex track (enough for an oval).
This set sits between 7938 and 7939 in price, but may have the most playability of the three. I find that kids love all the trains and naturally expand them with their own bricks and mini-figures, but this set has a bit more going on than the other two. While 7939 gives you two switches and a crane, with 3677's maintenance car, ballast car/loader, and hazardous waste car, there are more plot lines available (inevitably kids will stage a crash regardless of the train you buy).
I like the engine design; it is the latest in a long line of Lego switching engines, the most recent being #4512 from 2003, and one of the most classic being #7760 from 1980. This new engine is very long and has a lift-off top to access the cab. The louvered doors on the side open to reveal engine controls (a sticker). My favorite part of the set is the brown tipper wagon. The green and white boxcar is merely okay. I don't like how the double doors overhang the end when they are open; a single door would have been fine. As for the MOW flatcar, I would have preferred a car that was a piece of MOW machinery (e.g. a ballast spreader) or carried something other than a truck (perhaps a flatcar full of rails). The MOW flatcar has a small cab with a hinged roof.
I do recommend that you purchase #7936, Level Crossing, which has another Maintenance of Way vehicle that ties-in perfectly with 3677.
Not many stores routinely carry Lego trains and even fewer have them built for you to view. I recommend going to Youtube and doing a search for "Lego 3677 brickshopholland" so that you can get a better feel for this set. lets get strated i think that this was a great set the train is cool because it looks like a cool lego train i love how the cab is on the back of the engine it has good features like how the cab has all those windows i think i looks cooler than the yellow cargo train. i love the brown hopercar i totally love the boxcar design on it so what if the minifigures have no hasmat suite on the flatbed car is cool although the seat faces the wrong way to operate the small crane. i love the rial worker car the hopercar loader has nice detail on it ps it the train gets derailed on flexible track just flex it straight.

We got this for our 6yr old for Christmas and left it in the box for him to assemble. He was able to do so over time with only a few corrections along the way! He assembled the engine first, which he could play with right away. Then the other cars and buildings were put together over the next few days. Each one took under an hour for our novice lego builder. The train runs great and my son loves driving it. The track is easy to assemble and holds together very well.
We ordered the light kit to add on based on some other reviews. With no instructions for incorporating the lights, our current implementation has some wires hanging out, but that's the way my son likes it so it's fine. (My husband used some additional lego pieces we had to hide the wires and add the lights to look more correct to us, but that was not the way it was allowed to stay - haha!)
It's impressive the amount of detail that each train car and the conveyer belt incorporate. We've shown off the train to many people and everyone is equally impressed. Legos have come a long way since I was a kid!
