I picked up the Traxxas Stampede 4x4 VXL, and I am immensely impressed by most of the truck's features. It is blisteringly fast, durable, and easy to work on. Stock gearing is more than adequate for most driving situations (except for speed runs, for that you should use the included pinion). This truck does wheelies on command, and is relatively easy to drive. If you're looking for the ultimate backyard fun machine, look no further.
My only advice to any prospective owners is to upgrade the front and rear A-Arms, because the factory ones will break sooner than later. I highly recommend RPM's A-Arms, as they are very durable, are guaranteed for life, and are much less expensive than aluminum hop-ups. I would also stay away from 3S Lipos for this truck: it is uncontrollable after about 1/4 throttle with a 3S 5300 MAH Dynamite pack. a 2S Lipo is more than enough power.

I am relatively new to the RC truck world and I already own a 2wd Stampede. I decided to get this 4x4 model for the upcoming winter season and I wanted a new truck to customize. My friends are adamant that the "brushless" system is the way to go, even though my 550 motor seems to be holding up fine, this VXL definitely has more power!
To customize, I ordered these cool front shocks for it MSR9 Front Piggyback Shock, Blue, Stampede, Slash and the rear MSR9 Rear Piggyback Shock, Blue: Stampede, Slash, plus I also got a new body for it Early 50's Chevy Clear Body: ST, NST.
The battery that came with it is just the generic nimh battery and charger that takes several hours to charge. Plus the battery does not last very long. I got this hard case LiPo battery upgrade Bastens LiPo 7.4V 5000mAH upgrade battery for the Traxxas 2x4 4x4 VXL Stampede / Bandit / Slash / E-Revo / E-Maxx / Summit - a must upgrade or a high capacity alternative replacement - a factory fit! - and a "fast" charger that properly charges the battery cells individually Fast LiPo Battery Balance Charger - 40 Watt - 4.5 Amp - 1 2 3 or 4 cell batteries - Connectors included for the Parrot AR Drone & Traxxas 2x4 4x4 VXL Stampede / Bandit / Slash / E-Revo / E-Maxx / Summit & Losi E3 1/16 Mini ReadyLift SCT - The new battery lasts way longer, and it definitely makes this truck rip. Plus, the new charger lets me recharge very quickly. I will probably order a second battery so I can charge one while I am running the other one.
This truck is a bit expensive, but totally worth it. In hindsight I kinda wish I would have bought the 4x4 VXL first, rather than the 2wd.
** Edit 2011/11/21: I was installing my new Integy shocks, and noticed that the right front wheel had excessive slop in the steering. I disassembled the steering sector, and discovered that the factory assembly was missing one of the bearings. I called Traxxas support, and they were appologetic and generously offered to ship me the parts.

Anyone considering an rc should give this one a shot. Has training mode for beginners, and can accept lipo when the user is reaady to unleash this awesome hobby grade rc. Its built tough with an emphasis on userability, meaning its simple to replace parts through creative engineering. Traxxas customer support is amazing (and still in the USA).
